Aims

  • Introduce the participants to the marine survey, analysis and consultancy industry.
  • Promote knowledge and practical skill in marine macro-invertebrate identification.
  • Enthuse the participants upon this subject in order to provide the industry with the workforce of the future.
  • Develop an understanding of the use of taxonomic keys and other source material.
  • Guide the participants through 3 of the major phyla found in the marine environment, the molluscs, polychaetes and crustaceans.
  • Provide industry expertise to support university marine, zoological and biological teaching programmes.

Content

  • Tour: A tour of EMU facilities and equipment.
  • Lectures : Introduction to commercial environmental biology. Introduction to Taxonomy. Mini-lectures on anatomy and diagnostic features.
  • Practicals: Teaching relevant specimen handling, microscopy and dissection techniques. Introducing keys and providing practical experience of identification with a range of different specimens.

Course Fees

The maximum size for any given session is 12 participants, although multiple sessions can be run if expressions of interest from clients exceed this number.  

The cost of the course is as follows, prices inclusive of VAT:

Student Rate –£46.50

Professional Rate -£61.50

We can offer 10% discount on the prices above to any single client whom subscribes 10 or more places.

The details herein relate to our Introductory level 1 course, a follow-up Introductory 2 course is also available. 

We are equally able to provide more advanced courses where required, focusing on particular taxonomic groups (e.g. specific phyla, family or genera), locations or substrates of interest, please ask for further details.

The Doodle poll allows us to determine the best date to run a course based upon number and availability of subscribers.  We shall select a date that the largest number of subscibers can mutually attend.  If your availability changes then please update the poll.

3. Booking Payment

Once a course date has been selected, you will be contacted for payment of the course fees.

Pre-Payment of the Full Amount is required to secure your place.  Course fees should be paid to our account via high street / online banking.   A form will be provided to you with our account information.  Once paid the booking fee is not refundable apart from an exceptional circumstance.
