20 February 2012EMU Limited to carry out nautical charting around Barra
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has awarded marine survey specialists EMU Limited (EMU) a multi-million pound hydrographic survey contract as part of its programme to systematically survey the waters around the UK, which includes previously un-surveyed waters around the Isle of Barra.
The EMU contract will cover the Shallow Water Lot of the MCA’s Civil Hydrography Programme, which aims to gather accurate hydrographic information for the purpose of updating United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) nautical charts and publications.
The work will focus on eight main coastal regions around the UK. These areas range from Barra Island in Scotland and Carmarthen Bay in Wales to Belfast Lough in Northern Ireland and Poole Bay in England.
Survey operations in Barra are planned to commence during March 2012 and will continue for approximately five months from a small 12 metre survey vessel conducting shallower water survey during day operations and a larger 20 metre vessel operating on a 24 hour basis conducting survey operations in the deeper offshore sections. Survey operations in the Hebrides will incorporate some of the most challenging areas as most of them remain un-surveyed to this day and some were last surveyed by lead line in the 1800s..
The survey around the Isle of Barra in the western Isles is separated into two areas encompassing the Sound of Barra and Barra Head to Castlebay. The Sound of Barra survey area extends south from the island of Orosay on the West coast of South Uist to Grejan Head on the West Coast of Barra and Bruernish Point on the East Coast. The Barra Head to Castlebay survey area extends from Berneray at the southernmost extent up the east coast of Mingulay to the Island of Pabbay and beyond to Biruaslum on the east coast of Vetersay and to the sheltered waters of Castlebay.
EMU project manager for survey operations in Barra said the EMU team is very much looking forward to spending several months working in one of the most beautiful parts of the world.
“More importantly, in undertaking this survey work we hope that residents of Barra will benefit from the improved safety of navigation in the area as the data EMU will be collecting will appear on several charts that mariners will use in navigating the islands. This in turn will help to protect this sensitive environment from pollution associated with vessels running aground.”
The UK has a 200-year tradition of surveying its home waters to improve shipping safety. From the eras of Captains Cook, Beaufort and Fitzroy, the UK has exported its hydrographic expertise worldwide. EMU will build on this tradition by using the latest dual-head high- resolution multibeam echo sounders to obtain seabed depths in unprecedented detail.

2 February 2012EMU Limited announces biodiversity and coastal defence engineering research
Marine consultancy and survey specialists EMU Limited, will collaborate with global engineering consultancy Arup and the Russell Group, University of Southampton on research into using sustainable engineering to further the ecosystem services offered by intertidal communities living on coastal defence structures.
The work will seek to achieve engineering for biodiversity and biodiversity for engineering.
Entitled “Intertidal structures: Engineering for sustainability and biodiversity", the study will involve desk-based research as well as fieldwork on coastal defence structures in the UK. It will also incorporate an assessment of engineering design and how artificial habitats may be optimised to enhance both local and regional ecological interactions.
The joint research will then assess how resultant intertidal communities may be “steered” to be of benefit to both biodiversity and also to coastal defence managers.
Arup Senior Maritime Engineer, Dr Matilda Kitou said that it is not to suggest that the research would find a one size fits all solution in terms of the type of coastal defence structure that can be used.
“Rather we are looking to assess whether the colonising community could be optimised for both engineering and ecological benefit”.
