FEATURES - Oceanographers Reach for New Heights - Apr 2007

When most people think of oceanography, images of waves, boats and beaches usually spring to mind. However, the reality can be more complicated; modern oceanography often involves remote monitoring and the transmission of large quantities of data. Such requirements can mean that aerials and instruments need installing at height. In order to meet this requirement, five of the oceanography team were chosen to undertake a Working at Height Course in Tebay, North Cumbria. The course included fall arrest systems, safe work positioning and rescue techniques.

Most recently, the working at height team were required to scale a 25m tower on Wallasea Island, Essex in order to install a camera system to monitor a wetland creation project. For more information, real-time images and met data, visit http://www.abpmer.net/wallasea/

Having qualified in rope access techniques, Mr Paul Flannery was selected to attend a course to train him to operate Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs). Paul successfully completed the course and is now IPAF accredited and qualified to operate trailer-mounted or vehicle-mounted cherry-pickers up to 26m in height.
