FEATURES - Southampton Container Terminal Monitoring Contract Apr 2007
The EMU Water Quality team have recently commenced a monitoring contract for Southampton Container Terminals (SCT).
SCT is continually developing and adapting to meet the needs of ever larger vessels. In 2005, SCT has undertaken a major redevelopment of its yard layout and gate processes thereby increasing its capacity to close to 2 million TEU. SCTï's customers schedule 12 container ships into the Terminal each week, the majority with capacities between 6,000 and 8,753 TEU, the largest in the world.
The annual monitoring programme, carried out in support of SCT's Environmental Quality System, includes sampling and testing of four consented effluent treatment plants, surface water interceptors and outfalls.
EMU is providing routine sampling, analytical and consultancy services, including short notice, wet weather response sampling. The monitoring programme demonstrates consent compliance and control of the port operations, with respect to impact of surface water run-off on Southampton Water.
