FEATURES - Studying the Environmental background of the Barents Sea and the Socio-economic Background of the Kola Peninsula
Apr 2007

EMU was recently contracted by an international Oil & Gas company to study the environmental background of the Barents Sea and the socio-economic background of the Kola Peninsula, in order to determine the optimum environmental conditions to conduct exploration drilling and seismic surveys, and identify the potential impacts the proposed operations might have on the socio-economic interests in the area.

The Environmental background research was conducted in order to assess weather conditions within the exploration area and identify the best weather window for the surveys. In order to achieve this, EMU assessed the following parameters:

  • Ice cover
  • broken ice cover
  • visibility conditions
  • fog
  • wind speed
  • temperature
  • precipitations
In order to study the potential impacts of the proposed exploration activities and potential future offshore and on land infrastructures, the following parameters were assessed:
  • Physical parameters: Water Quality, Air Pollution, Radioactivity
  • Biological Parameters: Conservation Areas
  • Scope of local economy (population, employment per sector, etc)
  • Industries within potential landfall and production sites
  • Transport and communications
  • Fishing industry
  • Tourism and Recreation
  • Commercial activity
  • Industrial activity
  • Agricultural use
  • Landscape and visual amenity
  • Cultural heritage
  • Industrial development trends (e.g. declining and growth sectors)
This background study resulted in the production of a comprehensive and detailed report, which was submitted to our client and used in support of their application for an oil exploration licence in the Barents Sea.
