EMU Limited microbiology laboratories provides UKAS accredited Legionella water testing services. EMU’s Legionella water testing service offers an analytical service for Legionella control that satisfies the requirements of the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice and Guidance on Legionella control, “Legionnaires’ Disease: The Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems (L8)”.
EMU provides two water quality tests that are associated with microbiological monitoring for Legionella risk assessment and management.
- Total Viable Counts (measures general bacteria levels)
- Detection and Enumeration of Legionella bacteria

Our service
EMU complies with the 4 criteria specified in ACOP L8 to be considered when selecting a microbiology laboratory to carry out your Legionella water testing:
- EMU is UKAS accredited for the Legionella water tests required
- EMU participates in the ‘Health Protection Agency ‘Water Microbiology External Quality Assessment Scheme for the isolation of Legionella from water’
- EMU’s procedures comply with the minimum theoretical mathematical detection limit of less than or equal to 100 Legionella bacteria per litre of sample
- EMU’s sampling is carried out in accordance with ISO 11731:1998
EMU is also UKAS accredited for microbiological water sampling, providing an additional level of quality and traceability in services provided.
